Connie wasn’t certain what to think or believe as she sat in the passenger seat of Lance’s immaculate car. The interior was clean as a whistle and smelled of polish, as if he had just spiffed it up at a car wash. The mere thought that he might have washed the car just for her sent tingles shooting down to her toes. She said little as they drove to the restaurant, making only casual comments about work. Lance then began chatting away about his first job as a grocery boy who delivered parcels to customers.

“And one time. . .” He began to laugh. Connie couldn’t help smiling in return. Lance had a friendly, easygoing laugh that never failed to put her at ease. “I had two gallons of ice cream to deliver. This lady, Miss Paula we called her, loved her ice cream. Her tooth was sweeter than anyone I had ever met. I had the ice cream on the backseat, and before I could deliver it to her, my car had a flat tire. At the time, I was driving this really old rust bucket I affectionately called Rusty. In all honesty I was lucky to start it in the morning. So there I was in the middle of nowhere with two gallons of ice cream melting in the backseat. By the time I managed to get the tire changed, a glacial ice cream lake had formed on the seat and dripped to the floor. I called it Lake La Crème.”

Connie laughed in glee. “Oh, Lance, you’re hilarious.”

He grinned. “So I had to run back to the store and tell Mr. Carson, the grocery clerk, what happened. Then I had to clean out my car. What a mess. And yes, you know what happens to milk when it sits awhile in a warm car.”

“Ew!” she exclaimed, holding her nose.

“I never quite got the smell out after that. But Rusty was soon for the junkyard anyway.”

“Lance, it’s a good thing you’re not telling me this story when we’re about to eat or anything,” she said with a wry grin.

Their lighthearted conversation instantly calmed her. Perhaps Lance realized her anxiousness when she first entered the vehicle. Like the good manager he was, he’d smoothed over the rough edges with a humorous tale about himself. She took it as a sign of a man who understood feelings, and like he claimed, one who grew up surrounded by the emotional complexities of women.

When they pulled into the restaurant lot, Connie was feeling much better and more confident—ready to face whatever Lance came here to discuss. She couldn’t quite imagine what he might say. Right now the whole clock scenario was like a revolving door. Somewhere it had to stop. She prayed it would at the right entrance. When Lance held open the door for her and she gazed into his dark brown eyes, she wondered if perhaps the mysterious revolving door was meant to lead her to him. Maybe he was the one God had chosen to give her the answers.
